The definition of value is: value /ˈvaljuː/ principles or standards of behaviour; one’s judgement of what is important in life.
In monetary terms, we set a value on something by how much we are willing to pay for a product or service.
In moral terms, a value is an ideal that we give a high degree of importance. They set a moral code that guides us through life and sets us up with priorities that motivate us.
Most likely – whether you know it or not – you are living your life according to other people’s values.
When we stay true to our values, we are often more comfortable, content and without internal conflict, whereas the opposite is true when we stray from our truth.
When this happens, we can feel extremely uncomfortable and unhappy as we are not acting in alignment with our priorities.
First, start with your personal moral code and write down what you get upset about, what gets you motivated in the mornings, and what you find you fight for/over in social settings. There are reasons behind this!
Throughout life – especially during conflict – you will find yourself arguing over ideas you want to defend. These are your values. Ask yourself what the answers are to the above questions and find the underlying themes as to why they upset you. Then reflect on how to put them in the spotlight of your life and business.
Once you’ve defined your core values, use them every day to continue to build upon them. If integrity and honesty is something you deeply value, be sure to set up your business in a way that never compromises that.
By working your values into your daily life, you’re essentially working them into your business life as well – and that’s where the true magic happens.
